PROFILE
Andy Sykes is qualified in planning, tourism and marketing and has over
20 years experience of working in the tourism and leisure industry in
both the public and private sectors. Andy has an interesting background
having managed a large tourism department within the public sector and
having worked in the commercial sector as Commercial Manager for a top
tourist attraction, and as Project Director for two public-private sector
regeneration partnerships.
Andy established his own consultancy, Sykes Leisure Projects, in 1994.
His extensive experience in tourism and leisure has enabled the practice
to become involved in tourism and leisure planning, project funding, feasibility
studies, strategic planning, business development, interpretation and
all aspects of tourism and leisure marketing.

Karen has studied extensively within higher education studies that
were combined with international sport and sports coaching (volleyball).
Upon completion of a doctorate, she undertook a change in direction and
entered the field of leisure management within the public sector, the
majority of work being project based. Since 1989, Karen has been involved
in higher education with a key role in the delivery of the Recreation
Management Degree and Masters Degree at Sheffield Hallam University. Consultancy
has formed an integral part of this employment in order to further industry
links and continue personal involvement in the evolving leisure industry.
In 1995, Karen joined Sykes Leisure Projects as an Associate Leisure Consultant.
She has subsequently worked on a variety of leisure related consultancy
projects.

Andrew Arrol is a Director of Arrol & Snell Ltd, a small to medium
sized Architectural, Conservation and Planning Practice based in Shrewsbury,
specialising in historic building, conservation and heritage/visitor centre
building projects. The Practice was established in 1980 and there are
two Directors, Andrew Arrol and Alan Snell. Today the practice employs
a staff of 17 and has received over 33 Awards and Commendations for its
work to date.
The practice has excellent links with national and local conservation
bodies and provides consultancy services to English Heritage, the National
Trust, the Landmark Trust and the Monument Trust. Andrew has maintained
close links with Sykes Leisure Projects over the years, and has worked
with the practice on a variety of heritage based projects.

Andrew Arrol graduated from the Architectural Association School of Architecture
in 1970 and is a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects.
After four years with the Basil Spence Canonbury Practice he became Conservation
Officer for Shrewsbury in 1975 before forming the Arrol & Snell Practice
in 1980.

EDUCATION
David studied architecture at the University of Nottingham between 1962
and 1967 and became a registered architect in 1968.
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
Upon graduating in 1967 David moved to Liverpool where he worked initially
for the City Housing Department. In 1969 he was appointed as the architect
for the Shelter Neighbourhood Action Programme (S.N.A.P.) working for
the Grandby Area of Liverpool. S.N.A.P. was the first project in the UK
to directly involve the residents in the improvement of their area and
from this project the first housing co-operatives were born.
In 1974 David established Building Design Group, an architectural practice
working primarily on housing projects, both new build and rehabilitation.
In 1984 the practice became the Wilkinson, Hindle, Halsall, Lloyd Partnership.
Throughout the life of the Practice David has remained a working
architect and has been directly responsible for many major projects including
community leisure and recreation developments throughout Merseyside and
from the Nottingham Office, in Newcastle and Leicester. Sykes Leisure
Projects have worked with all the regional offices on a variety of community
based leisure projects.
Over the last year or so David has been working on energy efficient self
build timber house in the Snowdonia National Park. The site is within
an area of oak woodland and within a SSI.

David is an examiner for the Part III (Professional Practice). Examinations
at the universities of Liverpool and Manchester and is currently President
of the Liverpool Architectural Society.

Aylwyn is a founding partner of the creative design and
communications partnership, AB Graphics. AB have built over the past 17
years of operation, an extensive and loyal client base by providing effective
creative communication solutions, professionally and on time. The practice
is owned by three partners who are hands on Chartered Designers
and communication professionals. A highly qualified and motivated team
totalling sixteen supports the partners.
A comprehensive computer graphics system with 14 workstations,
networked to our own image setting facilities, allows our team of designers
complete creative control and flexibility, and the ability to output artwork,
bromide and colour separated film in-house. ISDN also enables us to transfer
complete origination for brochures and advertisements to printers and
publications nationally and internationally. When deadlines are approaching,
these facilities are available when a client wishes to make last minute
changes to a piece of work.
AB Graphics provides design, marketing services for a wide
range of organisations including corporate, commercial, local government,
utilities and community-based clients. Working mainly in the West Country,
we also service clients from Carlisle to Cardiff, Belfast to Swindon.
Continued expansion over the past few years has enabled us to cement strong
relationships with an increasing number of blue chip corporate
clients, who depend upon working with a professional and reliable team.
Aylwyn's conceptual thinking and creativity, whether using
the drawing board for his ideas or CAD inspired, has produced scores of

Prior to working for Sykes Leisure Projects, Kathryn worked for two heritage
design companies where she gained practical experience in the heritage
tourism business.
Kathryn has been extensively involved in desk-based research,
field research and report writing. She has practical experience of primary
and secondary research, archaeological digs, conservation, interpretation
work, and music and arts development. She has qualifications in computing
and practical knowledge of computers and is a classical violinist.
Since working for Sykes Leisure Projects in 1998, Kathryn
has gained considerable experience in the leisure and tourism industry
and has helped assist Andy on project research, report writing and general
company development. After 2 years working full-time for Sykes Leisure
Projects Kathryn left the company to train for a PGCE in primary education
at Derby University, with a view to becoming an education officer at a
visitor attraction in the longer term. Kathryn has retained an interest
in Sykes Leisure Projects and continues to work with the company on a
part-time associate basis.
